Sometimes it just takes a little one-on-one help to cut through the studying clutter.
College Nannies + Tutors is ready to help families fill that need.
For a limited time, CNT is offering Macaroni Kid readers a free, one-hour trial of tutoring services. The Minnesota-based franchise started in 2001, and now has over 80 locations across the United States, including Canton/Ann Arbor and Northville/Novi.
“We see a difference in students from when they first come in, to when they start developing a relationship with their tutor,” said Sharon Ragland-Keys, owner and managing director of two CNT locations, and mother of a high school student. “I have an introverted son who is now finally speaking up to his tutors and it’s wonderful to see the difference in him, taking leadership and ownership of his responsibilities.”
CNT offers several categories of tutoring – homework help, college test prep, study skills, essay writing, math, and science. Most students are middle school and high school age.
“That’s probably the time where parents have said, ‘Ok, I can’t interact with you over homework anymore,’” said Ragland-Keys. “We get a lot of calls from families at that stage, because they’re not really looking to sit down and help their child figure out this math problem.”
Jenna Cocagne, tutoring coordinator for CNT, helps assess what a new student’s needs are, and then matches them with one of their specially-trained college tutors.
“If they’re coming in for math help, whether it’s algebra, geometry or calculus, we go a little deeper and try to find out – are they performing well on homework and just bombed the test, or vice-versa,” said Cocagne. “That way, we can see if they have any sort of testing anxiety, or if they just have a hole in understanding content. Once I assess that, I’ll find a tutor that can help with that anxiety, or content.”
According to Ragland-Keys, the one-on-one aspect of CNT’s tutoring services gives students an edge, especially for high schoolers who often struggle to stay organized.
“The students get an opportunity to get to know their tutor because they are spending that hour or two hours together, side-by-side, looking through homework, checking-in and helping coach and guide them through their day or weekend,” said Ragland-Keys. “We see a maturing with students as they work together. We’re not here to evaluate them, we’re here to help them grow and succeed at whatever school they choose to apply to.”
